Communicating tough issues: Avoid using “you” statements. Use “I feel” or “I need” statements instead. Try writing a letter as an alternative to face to face communication, especially if you feel your spouse will react negatively to a sensitive issue or comment. Writing can help you assess whether what you say is what you intended to say. Writing also gives the other spouse time to process what is being said.
