Mitch Temple Online: Bringing Hope Back to Your Marriage

My husband has Borderline Personality Disorder

Hi, Mitch!

I've read most of your book and I really am trying to see my husband through God's eyes.  We recently found out that my husband suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder.  And he just lost his job of 20 years while the psychiatrist has him off for mental health reasons.   All of the resources I've found are secular.  Are you familiar with this?  Since he has a mental illness, he is impossible to have a rational, deep conversation with.  His temper and the way his mind works prevent him from being able to understand my heart.   At best, our conversation is shallow and safe, at worst, cursing and blaming.  I would welcome any prayers and thoughts that anyone may have to share.

God bless you and your ministry!

Jennifer, thanks for reading the book. Seeing your spouse through God's eyes is challenging at best, especially when mental illness is involved. Mental illness is exactly that, an illness. It distorts the real person and they become someone we never expected. Our expectations and hopes are often shattered.

Dealing with mental illness in a marriage is an extremely complex issue. If you are not already, I encourage you personally to work with a therapist who is experienced in helping spouses deal with this issue. Borderline Personality Disorder is extremely complex in and of itself. Part of the challenge of helping a spouse with this illness is understanding the illness. As I say in the book, understanding can lead to acceptance and acceptance to healing. In this case, that can also be true. The more you understand, the more you are better equiped to navigate the mood swings, anger and turbulence associated with borderline issues.

I can also recommend 3 resources:
1. A secular book titled: Stop Walking on Egg Shells- Living with someone who has BLPD. http://www.bpdcentral.com/bks/swoe.php
2. Meier Clinics out of Dallas Tx. http://www.meierclinics.com/?gclid=CPSh3p_slqECFUKU7QodQjJp4w
(offers treatment and support for patients and families)
3. Focus on the Family Counseling Referal Network- offers free referals to a Christian therapist based on your need in your particular area of the country (www.focusonthefamily.com or call 1800AFAMILY).

I hope these suggestions are helpful. I will be praying for you as I have experienced this illness in my family as I grew up. I saw the effect firsthand. The good news, is that it can be treated and spouses can learn to deal with the challenges. God bless you in this journey of healing and discovery.

Mitch
